Ajay Thakur, is a name known to everyone in the world of Kabaddi. 31 years old, Ajay Thakur from a village called Dabhota near Nalagarh is a youth icon in the state today. He is one of the finest raiders in the world and probably the greatest of all time raiders. In the Kabaddi World Cup in 2016, he single handedly took india to the victory.
Ajay Thakur was born on 1 May 1986 in Dabhota village in Nalagarh area of Himachal Pradesh. He got his training in the Sports Authority of India(SAI) Hostel Bilaspur. He started playing Kabaddi at age of 10. His father was a wrestler and his uncle was a Kabaddi coach, who trained him in initial days.
6’2″ tall Ajay Thakur has one of the longest reach in the business. Running hand touch is his most successful tactic. His signature move is frog Jump, which he does after scoring a point. He is also called the Do-or-Die specialist for his success rate in Do and Die raids.
Honoring his superb performance in the World Cup and his continuous efforts towards the sport, Himachal Govt. offered him the post of Deputy Commissioner in the Police department. DSP Ajay Thakur is under training currently.
Internation Career
Ajay was first selected in the national team at age of 19 in 2007. After that he never looked back. He helped India Gold medals at 2007 Asian Indoor Games, 2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and 2014 Asian Games.
It was Thakur’s sensational performance in 2016 Kabaddi World Cup in Ahmedabad, So that India could manage to win the tournament. Throughout the tournament Thakur was the top scorer for the team in almost every match. He scored a total of 68 points in 7 matches out of which 64 were taken in the raid. Ajay scored 11 points in semifinal. But his best performance was yet to come. Facing Iran in the finals India was lagging by 5 points at half time. Then came the savior Ajay Thakur. With his continuous successful raids, India overcame the deficit and got to win the match with a comfortable margin of 9 points with the scores 39-29. Ajay scored 12 raid points
Pro Kabaddi League Career
Thanks to Pro Kabaddi League for reviving and popularising the sport of Kabaddi in India. Started in 2014, Pro Kabaddi League gained a huge success and popularity. As a result Kabaddi players like Ajay became famous and are sports celebrities today. Ajay Kumar is presently playing with Sachin Tendulkar’s Tamil Thalaivas as the captain in 2017 season. Ajay had tremendous first two seasons. He was the top 3rd positions in raid points in first and second seasons.
Besides Kabaddi, Thakur loves Makki ki Roti and Sarson ka Saag. He is a big animal lover. He spends his time with his pet animals at home. He has four pet dogs too.
Star Ajay Thakur has a very large following in social media too. He has over 1.35 Lakh followers on Facebook and over 47,000 on Instagram. Thakur was named as the Himachali of the year in the Himachal Excellence Awards in 2014.
Pro Kabaddi League 2017
Ajay Thakur had a wonderful 5th season of PKL. Playing for Tamil Thalaivas as a captain, Ajay scored 222 total points and remained in the third position. Although, Team did not manage to do well but Ajay was in remarkable form throughout the season. He also got in 3rd position in raid points with 213 points and joint second in super 10’s with 12 super 10.
Team India Captaincy
Following his amazing performances in Kabaddi World Cup 2017 and PKL 5, Ajay was announced to lead Team India in Asian Kabaddi Championship to be held in Iran from 23-26 November. Ajay will be the first Himachali player to lead Indian National team in any sport. Defender Vishal Bhardwaj will be the another Himachali player selected in 14 men squad for the championship.
